Monsters in Cages The title for this came from Bruce Dickinson's song "Machine Men" which contains the line "see the monsters in their metal cages." This is a somewhat disturbing story about children who are kidnapped and placed into cages in the basement of a neighbor's house. They are rescued and form a bond that is unbreakable. The one thing that they can't escape, however, are the memories. This story shows the strength that comes from life's dark experiences and demonstrates that love can rise from such filth. Ghosts That We Knew I wrote this soon after finishing "More Anger Than Sorrow." In that novel, there are several scenes that revolve around a battle in World War I. I did a lot of research on that war and found it very interesting (my great-grandfather fought in World War I). This story is an extension of what I learned about those brave men and their sacrifice. This story is written from the point of view of a man in that war. Narrated is what he sees, hears, says, and does. His bravery is a reflection of the men of that war and his outlook is a reflection of the death that surrounds him. Flowers in the Garden of the Gods I'm not sure what inspired this short story. It is quite dark and disturbing. I'll give the warning now - if murder and suicide is not your type of story, you shouldn't read this. The story takes place in Southern Illinois at the Garden of the Gods. A man has just discovered his passion in life. He enjoys pushing people off the rock formations onto the forest floor one hundred feet below. Lying in the Mist This short story was written in January 2013. I was inspired to write this while reading Dan Simmon's "The Terror." The story tells of a little girl walking in the woods with her father. Soon she becomes separated from her father. In the mist, she sees the beast. She has only one chance to escape. Will she find freedom or will she fall prey? The Morality Machine This short story was written during Summer 2011. I had considered making this a full length novel but it works very well as a short story, and so a short story it will stay. The story takes place under the oceans where humanity is forgotten. All but a few of the human race still live. A chance discovery leads them to the Morality Machine, something for which they have been searching even though they don't know what the machine actually is. This machine could be the answer to everything. |
